21 Days Without Meat, Dairy, Caffeine, and More: My Biggest Takeaways
Last month, I challenged myself to go 21 days without meat, alcohol, dairy, coffee, caffeine, or sugary items. Whew! It was a journey y’all, but one that has shifted my perspective on food, health, and self-discipline in major ways. While I had many takeaways, the biggest one is clear—a healthier diet is a must moving forward for both my physical and mental health. Here’s what I learned:
1. Water Over Everything
I love a good ginger ale or a refreshing drink with my meal, but 21 days without sugary beverages showed me that I don’t need them. My body thrived on increased water intake, and I felt more hydrated, energized, and clear-headed. Water is truly the foundation of wellness!
2. Cutting Caffeine Was Hard…But Worth It
Before this, I was drinking coffee daily. So, let’s talk about those caffeine withdrawals—whew! The first week was rough, but I pushed through, and by week two, I realized I didn’t need caffeine for energy. Instead, I fueled my body with proper nutrition, hydration, and a great alternative—mushroom coffee, which I’m continuing to use. Try it for yourself here for 15% off. Moving forward, I’m limiting caffeine because I now know my energy doesn’t depend on it.
3. Adapting My Diet Was Key to Success
Week one was the hardest because I followed the Daniel Fast, which focuses on plant-based, whole foods. I felt physically weak and lacked energy. So, in week two, I switched things up by incorporating more plant-based protein through a vegan and vegetarian approach. The shift made all the difference—my energy returned, and I felt stronger almost immediately.
4. A Plant-Based Diet Requires Planning
I'll be honest—I ordered out more than I wanted to during this time, but everything was healthy, so I cut myself some slack. I was still making dinner for my family, so I would eat the veggies, but then I would still be hungry. About midway through, I realized I had to plan more, cook bigger portions, and even when ordering out, I ordered multiple meals so that there was always something at home to eat. Alternating between smoothies, eggs, potatoes, and wheat toast became my go-to breakfast options. Collard greens, carrots, and fried kale were some of my favorite side dishes that turned into entrees. When ordering out, I enjoyed Cava’s Falafel Bowl and Silver Diner’s Thai Cauliflower Quinoa Pasta and Impossible™ Meatless Taco Bowl.
5. A Healthier Diet is Non-Negotiable
While I’m not committing to a fully vegan or vegetarian lifestyle (because, baby, it’s a commitment!), I also can’t go back to eating the way I did before. My taste buds have changed, and honestly, I just don’t crave certain foods anymore. I truly believe that some of my past health challenges were directly related to my diet, so I’m making more mindful choices without guilt. It’s about balance, not perfection.
6. Self-Discipline Unlocks Everything
This experience wasn’t just about food—it was a spiritual, physical, and personal growth journey. I’m so proud that I kept my word to myself, even when I was tempted. This was the longest I’ve ever gone without meat or dairy, and it wasn’t easy. But I did it! And now, I feel more in control of my habits, my mindset, and my health. This journey has ignited a fire in me to be more intentional about what I consume, how I care for my body, and how I show up in life.
This 21-day journey showed me that small, intentional changes can lead to major transformations. I’m not perfect, and I’m not trying to be, but I am doing better and feeling better—and that’s what matters most. If you’ve ever considered making a change in your diet, I highly encourage you to listen to your body, be patient with yourself, and trust the process. Your health is worth it!
