The Ultimate Vacation Packing List: How I Fit Everything in a Carry-On
Listen, for the past year, I've exclusively used carry-on luggage, and I've got it down to a science. Everything I'm about to share fits perfectly in my carry-on suitcase and duffel bag, which serves as my personal item. Why just carry-ons? Because I'm not about to let lost luggage ruin my vacation (like it tried to in the past)! After perfecting this system through multiple trips, I'm here to share exactly how I pack efficiently while still having all my outfit options.
Pro Packing Tips for Carry-On Success
Use a packing list (save this post for reference!)
Roll don't fold for maximizing space!
Try on all outfits to avoid overpacking. If you don’t love how it looks, don’t pack it.
Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched
Check weather forecasts before finalizing outfits
Pack outfits together (whether in your duffel or suitcase) and pack by day/activity
Use compression packing cubes or regular packing cubes, as needed
Keep toiletries TSA-compliant (3.4 oz or less)
Utilize every inch of space (stuff socks in shoes!)
Pack heavy items wherever makes most sense for balance
Keep valuables easily accessible
Choose a duffel with a luggage sleeve - this is key for easy airport navigation when you can slide it right onto your suitcase handle!
Be flexible with your bags - sometimes clothes work better in the duffel, sometimes in the suitcase
Pack a lightweight blanket and a neck pillow, if you plan to rest on the plane, and/or a book if you plan to read.
Beauty and Self-Care Essentials
Let's start with the non-negotiables that keep me glowing on the go:
Satin/silk pillowcase (because we're not letting hotel pillowcases undo our hair care or cause breakouts for sensitive skin)
Skincare favorites:
Makeup remover (clean skin is happy skin)
Travel-sized skincare routine essentials
Signature perfume (because smell good = feel good)
Full makeup bag for those vacation glam moments
Handheld fan if you’re going somewhere tropical/warm
Hair necessities:
Scarf and bonnet (protect the crown!)
Hair tools/products, as needed (edge control, hair spray, etc.)
Wellness Must-Haves
Because we're not letting anything interrupt vacation vibes:
Medicine kit
Excedrin Migraine (absolute lifesaver)
Daily vitamins
Benadryl
Menstrual cycle essentials, if applicable
Basic toiletries:
Soap
Body lotion and oil
Deodorant
Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
The Outfit Breakdown
Here's my foolproof formula for a 5 day trip:
Airport Look - Your girl keeps it cute but comfy in an athleisure set, jacket and comfortable sneakers. Bonus: This outfit saves space in your suitcase!
Footwear Strategy - I stick to these essentials:
1 pair of heels (for those dinner moments)
3 pairs of flat sandals (versatility is key)
1 pair of sneakers (for activities and exploring)
Shower shoes
Daily Outfit Planning - Two outfits per day is the sweet spot:
Daytime looks:
Short sets (my absolute fave!)
Maxi dresses
Swimsuits with transitional cover-ups
Comfortable exploring outfits
Sunglasses and Accessories
Crossbody or tote
Evening looks:
Maxi dresses
Chic 2 Piece Sets
Cutout dresses (serving looks!)
Elevated resort wear
Accessories
Small purse
Activity-Specific Pieces
1-2 yoga sets (because self-care doesn't stop on vacation)
OTHER Important Stuff
ID and passport if needed
Cash for emergencies and tips
Bank cards
Phone and device chargers
Reusable water bottle
Undergarments
Remember, the goal is to feel prepared, but not overloaded. These essentials keep me feeling confident, comfortable, and ready for whatever the trip brings!
