Daily 7: Show Self Love Through Self-Care

Welcome to Day 2 of the Daily 7 series meant to help us cultivate our daily focuses for peace, success and happiness. Yesterday, I kicked the series off by sharing one of my top focuses — prayer and peace. Today, I’m digging into another important focus.

As the saying goes, self-care is not selfish. Self-care in it's simplest form is caring for one's self. Sometimes that might look like making time for things that feel good to me like a bubble bath or massage, and other times it's doing things that are good for me like a visit to the doctor, making a healthy eating choice or going for a ride on my Peloton. Self care is an act of self love, so because I love myself, I'm working on being more intentional in this area.

When we overcomplicate self-care, we're opening a door to make excuses for not prioritizing it. By finally acknowledging that self-care is really just taking care of me, it allowed me to begin recognizing and cultivating lots of simple ways I can care for and show love to myself every day. What if we normalized taking a nap when we're tired as self-care? What about saying no to something, so you can say yes to you?

The reality is I can't visit the spa everyday or book a getaway every weekend, but I can take my supplements…I can choose to have some dairy-free days (and my stomach thanks me for it lol)…I can soak in the tub…I can block off my calendar for me time…I can do yoga…I can give myself a facial…I can set boundaries…I can love and care for myself! Now don't get me wrong, I was not always intentional about caring for myself. I was often last on my focuses, and I resented it. But I learned and continue to learn the importance of prioritizing me – even in the midst of balancing family, business, and more. If I'm no good to me, how can I be any good to anyone else? That's a line I run back to myself whenever I forget to care for me, and I hope it's one you remind yourself of, too. Again, self-care is self love.
